2014 Troy Clarke Medal nominees

We now have 6 outstanding nominees in Mugzy Mooka, Josh 'Docker' Barnett, Aiden Di Pietro, Arnold Conway, Bradwell Dick and Elia Ware.

New in 2014, the AFL Cairns Rising Star will win the Troy Clarke Medal with the medal winner being announced at AFL Cairns annual Presentation Night. The AFL Cairns Senior Coaches (who cannot vote for players from their own Club) and other person(s) as appointed by AFL Cairns are voting on a 5-4-3-2-1 basis from the list of weekly award winners, of which there will be 21 in total. The nominee who receives the most votes will be declared the winner of the Troy Clarke Medal for that season. This voting system is very similar to the way the NAB Rising Star is awarded.

Here are our nominees

Mugzy Mooka

Congratulations to our Round 6 AFL Cairns Rising Star Nominee, Mugzy Mooka from Manunda Hawks.

Playing half-back in just his fifth AFL Cairns Senior match after debuting in 2013, Mugzy was given a role to stop his direct opponent, and also assist his fellow defender and full-back stop the competitions leading goal kicker.

The 16 year old showed courage and poise of a 50+ gamer, rebounding out of the defensive half in favour of his side. He worked hard around the ground and whilst he's been consistent all year, he shone for the Hawks against the competitions benchmark side.

Along with his nomination and chance to take out the Troy Clarke Rising Star Award in 2014, Mugzy receives a 30 minute massage voucher at Nirvana Massage, Lake Street, Cairns.

Congratulations Mugzy

Josh "Docker" Barnett

Congratulations to our Round 10 AFL Cairns Rising Star Nominee, Josh "Docker" Barnett from Manunda Hawks.

In his second Senior game for 2014 after 6 games in his debut year in 2013, Josh played forward, kicking 2 goals and impressing his coach greatly with his work around the ground. Josh is courageous, standing underneath packs on several occasions. He gives his all at every contest and works hard to get himself in a goal kicking position. A great team player who also plays in the Colts competition.

Well done Josh.

Aidan Di Pietro

Manunda Hawks Aidan Dipietro is Round 14’s AFL Cairns Rising Star.

Aidan first tasted senior football in Cairns during this seasons XXXX Gold Preseason Cup but made his official senior debut in Round 1 against Centrals Trinity Beach. Round 14 was Aidan’s 9th senior match for his career, boasting an impressive 14 goal tally to his name. Aidan has proved to be an elusive forward with silky skills who can finish in front of goals, but also has the ability to play across half back and turn defence into attack. Aidan’s willingness to learn and his ‘never say die attitude’ holds him in good stead for a long senior career. Aidan is also a leader and important player in Manunda Hawks Colts side.

Congratulations Aidan on an excellent 2014 season so far and your Rising Star nomination.

Arnold Conway

The Manunda Hawks Football Club have worked tirelessly in 2014 with developing and improving young footballers. Their list, while young at present, boasts plenty of emerging talent, and this week’s AFL Cairns Rising Star nomination is another great example of that.

Congratulations to Arnold Conway, the Round 15 nominee. Arnold made his AFL Cairns Senior debut in Round 8 and has since gone on to play 5 Senior matches and kicking 2 goals. Arnold has also played 3 Reserve grade matches in 2014 and is a regular Colts player for Hawks, having played 12 Colts matches so far this season. The 17 year old, budding midfielder has a great work ethic and willingness to improve.

Congratulations Arnold.

Bradwell Dick

Congratulations to our Round 18 AFL Cairns Rising Star, Bradwell Dick from Manunda Hawks Bradwell made his Senior debut in Round 16 against Cairns Saints, with Round 18 being just his second Senior match. Up against the experienced Tigers, the athletic 15 year old kicked 2 goals and was named in the Hawks bests. Bradwell is a regular Colts player with Pyramid Power, and has played 13 games during the 2014 Colts season. A student at Djarragun College, he is new to the Cairns region in 2014, having played junior football previously in the AFL Central Australia competition. Courageous, hard at it and with clean skills, Bradwell looks destined to go on to play many more Senior games.

Congratulations Bradwell, the Round 18 AFL Cairns Rising Star nominee and now contender for Troy Clarke Rising Star Award.

Elia Ware

The Round 21 AFL Cairns Rising Star Nominee is Elia Ware from Manunda Hawks. Elia made his Senior debut against Central Trinity Beach Bulldogs in Round 1 and maintained his position in the Hawks backline all season, totalling seventeen (17) matches in 2014. As a 17 year old, Elia’s maturity has seen him take the competitions best forwards each week and performed consistently. He has a terrific overhead mark with a booming kick that provides plenty attack from Hawks defensive half. Elia’s attack on the football is unwavering and shows tremendous courage at every contest. In years to come, his stature and physical presence will develop further making him a prospect of the future in the AFL Cairns Competition.

Congratulations Elia on being the final AFL Cairns Rising Star nominee for Season 2014.
